Getting Started With Build A Web Site

Getting Started With Build A Web Site

for any aspiring webmaster when building and operating a website. A number of basic things should be considered. We outline the following steps for web site owners and/or web site creators (commonly known as webmasters).

  • Web Site Concept
  • Define your typical customer profile
  • How will customers find my web site?
  • Web site design Blueprint
  • Estimated costs

Web Site Concept

The creation of any website always begins with a concept, which is nothing more than a central topic that it focuses on. For small business owners this topic is often a niche or sub category of a much larger subject. For instance, you may specialise in dog training rather than the broader topic of dogs or even pets. Identifying your topic and how you make money (if that is your goal) or monetize your web site is a paramount step. If you already have an existing business then it will fall into place more readily. However, a new business will require detailed online and marketing research to ascertain a viable venture.

Define your typical customer

In any business it is vitally important to know who your typical customers are and an online web site is no different. This knowledge will influence all aspects of your web site to ensure it meets the needs or requirements of your customers. For example, do you want to have a dark black and red web site if the majority of your customers are female? Take time to determine these details and even consider giving your profiled customer a name to personalise” it. Some people opt to save and display this profile where they see it everyday so it is constantly in mind!

Customer sSite surveys and registrations provide insight to this information along with a marketing strategy , which we talk about in our Marketing Articles.

Also consider how your customers find and access your new site. For example, if all your visitors are finding you via search engines like Google (referred to as organic traffic) then you need to ensure Site Engine Optimisation (SEO) is employed to rank it as near to the top of Google search results as possible. You can also opt to pay for your new customer traffic through programs like Google Adwords. Ongoing analysis of traffic, usage and performance of your web site is another ongoing task you have to consider. Buzzard Domains hosting packages include free web statistics to help you accomplish this task. Web Statistics .

Web Site Blueprint

Let us now pull together the basic components required to design, build and manage your web site. This is taking a rudimentary approach but nevertheless it is scalable for any size business.

  • Site Engine Optimisation (SEO)
  • Web site layout
  • Site Builder software

Remember, pages are indexed by content and keyword relevance not web sites. So, each page can be written to a different set of keywords you wish to rank for in search engines.

    Web Site Layout

The design or layout of your site is crucial for a good customer experience. Put yourself in your customers shoes (you did define them earlier, didn’t you?). The old adage ‘les is more’ is often the best design approach to connect your visitors with what they wan to read and buy. Sitebuilder software such as Website Tonight provides you with prepared web site templates to get you started with professional designs you simply add text to. You can employ third party web designers or take everything yourself and create your own layout from scratch using HTML editors or sitebuilder software. Managing the content of the site can be a large concern and more recently software like WordPress has improved this dilemma by providing you content management in quick easy to use formats.

As you get more familiar with build a web site you will notice there are more features than we mention in this article. For the purposes of this Getting Started article I recommend you read more in our Help Centre, User Guides and articles.

Getting Started With SSL Certificates

Getting Started With SSL Certificates

Protect your transactions and customer data with a SSL Certificate from Buzzard Domains .

  • Secure UNLIMITED servers. Compare that to other Certification Authorities that charge for licensing on each server
  • Enjoy the backing of established industry standards. There is NO TECHNICAL DIFFERENCE between our certificates and

    any other major Certification Authority

  • 99.9% browser recognition and up to 256-bit encryption

Purchase SSL Certificates now for greater site security

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a Web site and encrypts information that is sent to the server using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. SSL certificates—built around stringent, industry-leading authentication
measures—allow Web site owners to secure all online transactions with up to 256-bit encryption. An SSL certificate on a Web site ensures that sensitive data is safe from prying eyes. When a site is using a SSL to protect your connection to that site you
will notice the address of the web site will now show “https://www.example.com” instead of “http://www.example.com”. The “s” denotes a secured connection has been established between your browser and the secured area at the destination web site. You may also notice in the browser Address Bar a small key or padlock icon is present when in a secured mode.

Web Site owners should deploy a SSL certificate on their site when financial transactions or purchases through a online shopping cart occurs. It ensures sensitive data such as credit card information is not shared with anyone or systems that are not authorised

by the SSL certificate. It ultimately provides a safer and trusted online ecxperience. One should be wary of any web sites that

do not employ SSL certificates when completing an online purchase!

Computer Signing Request is the first step

To request and establish a SSL you have to provide a Computer Signing Request(CSR)
which includes a unique system identifier from your application you wish to secure. This identifier is called the public key and is
included in the CSR along with your business annd domain details such as the Common Name to be secured with the SSL.

  • The Common Name is the fully-qualified domain name – or URL – for which you plan to use your certificate, i.e., the area of your
site you wish customers to connect to using SSL. For example, an SSL certificate issued for “www.yourcompanyname.com”

will not be valid for “secure.yourcompanyname.com.” If the Web address to be used for SSL is
“secure.yourcompanyname.com,” ensure that the common name submitted in the CSR is
    “secure.yourcompanyname.com.”

  • You can use a wildcard “*” such as “*.coolexample.com” or “www*.coolexample.com”). This will secure all subdomains of
    the Common Name
  • You submit your CSR for approval and then wait a short while to receive the encrypted licence and associated files which
you upload and install to your web site via a control panel similar to Buzzard Domains Hosting Manager. Your SSL
can secure 1 web site or be linked to many domains if needed.

    • As you get more familiar with SSL Certificates you will notice there are more features than we mention in this article. For the purposes of this Getting Started article we recommend you read more in our Help Centre, User Guides and articles.

    Getting Started With EMail Accounts

Buzzard Domains email not only gives you a personalized address but powerful protection against viruses and spam, easy-to-use tools like Calendar and Online File Folder® and much more.>

We offer free email accounts with certain purchases as well as the option to purchase your own personalised email plans to manage 1 or many EMail accounts. With so many free email sites such as Google or HotMail you

may be wondering why you would need to buy your own from anywhere else! Well, the reason usually relates to one of the following points.

    • Site or Brand recognition
    • Varied , scalable EMail systems
    • Full control of your EMail or Exchange servers
    • Unlimited EMail storage space
    • Free products and services

    Purchase EMail Plans

View our catalogue of Product and Services

Unlike your free Google GMail account a purchased account is associated to your own web site domain name such as myemail@example.com. This looks more professional than myemail@gmail.com and improves brand

awareness for your small business. You can add more employee accounts as needed and manage them from one location like our EMail Manager.

Now some small businesses do conduct their email conversations through Googgle or HotMail but consider how you would easily manage your many accounts in a free offering situation where those accounts are tied to

individuals. It is not straight forward and they will always retain the Google domain name which does not help your small business name.

    Size Matters For Email Accounts

Just like in web hosting services the EMail offerings are often shared between many users to produce their own personalised virtual environments. So, behind the scenes the service owner is using hardware and software to

slice up the system for 1000s of users who want the same basic service. Although we can modify our accounts to look and respond in different ways it is fundamentally the same shared service everyone gets. The service provider

will set the shared resources you can consume like your mailbox size. View our Web Based EMail limitations.

For a small business or individual with large volumes of EMail this can quickly be a problem as your emails start to be rejected and you cannot fit any in the mailbox until you take steps to relieve the situation. Again, it is not too

much of a problem until it happens and you urgently need to read an important email via your mobile device on the road! Look out for EMail plans that are scalable, meaning they can grow as your needs do.

For even more control and flexibility a small business should consider a dedicated EMail account solution. This provides Powerful corporate-class email in affordable, flexible packages. See our hosted Exchange corporate

messaging at small business prices here

    Accessing Your Email Account

Most EMail service providers allow you to access your email account using a regular web browser like Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. In these cases to logon and view your emails you simply click a link or type into your

Address Bar the location of your web email server logon point, like http://email.BuzzardDomains.com or http://www.gmail.com. Once you have created your account and logon you are presented with a virtual desktop where you can

view, send and manage emails as well as other items like calender appointments. This access method gives you global flexibility to logon and read your emails from anywhere using a computer or more recently, an internet

ready/smart cell phone. In these cases the control of all the data and screens is being delivered to you from a remote source over the internet and can vary greatly in layout and function depending on who is providing your EMail

    account service.

There are also EMail software clients that are installed directly into your computer such as Microsoft Outlook, which is part of their Microsoft Office Suite. This software provides you a familiar interface or screens which can be

configured to receive and manage email (and more) from many EMail accounts you might have. An EMail service provider runs hardware and software to support multiple EMail standards such as SMTP IMAP, Exchange and

POP3. What is the difference between IMAP, POP and Exchange? By

configuring your computers EMail client to use the specific providers EMail servers along with your logon credentials it delivers your email right to your desktop. The slight snag for this method of access is it goes with your computer

and would need setting up again if you used another computer. However, as the world sprints towards a mobile stance and electronics go with us everywhere this snag is becoming less important. Read more about making sense of EMail clients, desktop and Mobi in our Help Centre.

As you get more familiar with EMail accounts you will notice there are more features than a simple read and send of your correspondance. For the purposes of this Getting Started article I recommend you read more in the Buzzard Domains Support Centre Forum, User Guides and articles.

    Getting Started With Web Hosting

    • Quick Links FAQUser Guides

Basically, web hosting provides a location forindividuals, companies or organizations with their own secure computer data centre environment. The hosting company provides the computer hardware, products, services, and

systems to store any of your information, images, video, or other content and make it accessible to other users of the internet or Web. These elements combine to deliver a robust environment which you build and publish your web

site to without having to worry too much about the technicalities. That is not to say you ignore the technical aspects but for many people it is a secondary concern to the overall site creation, look and purpose.

Some of the high level key elements of a web hosting provider such as Buzzard Domains are as follows.

      • A secure, reliable environment
      • Varied , scalable hosting plans
      • Responsive Technical Support
      • Fast access from the internet to my site
      • Easy to use hosting management tools
      • Unlimited space for my site content to expand

      Web Hosting Plans

View our web hosting catalogue of Product and Services

To make a connection from your home computer to your hosted web site you usually require to link to an Internet Service Provider(ISP). An ISP is your local broadband or telephone company in most cases and provides the

physical network connections between your computer and all the other computers that comprise the internet. An ISP often offers web hosting products and services to their customers as well as being their gateway into the internet

from houses or work premises. Internet web sites run on computer hardware called servers. These servers are located in shared locations such as Buzzard Domains or at dedicated company data cetres or even in peoples

      homes all over the world.

      Fundamental Web Hosting Requirements

For a small business or individual to establish a web site at a hosting provider the following items are to be considered. To what degree you are involved will depend on personal preferences, finances and time constraints. For
instance, there are web hosting virtual / shared plans and web hosting dedicated plans which reduce or increase the level of personal involvement to create and maintain your site. In many cases the following roles will be provided

exclusively by the hosting provider. However, dedicated plans allow for a companies own employees to manage and support their entire server operation within broad guidelines of the data centre. You may even opt for a co-location

hosting plan where your own staff actually reside or remotely connect to your own exclusive area of the data centre. this obviously increases operational costs and would be typically for larger companies. If you are unsure of the

best option for your needs then contact our Support team for some guidance.

    Getting Started With Domain Names

    Getting Started With Domain Names

    Domain Names FAQ Help

A domain name is an alphabetic readable name that humans use to identify a location in the internet. These addresses are just like our familiar house, street, town addresses we have used for years to direct humans to our front

doors. Each domain name is unique and identifies our virtual house on the world wide web. Perhaps an even better analagy is our personal telephone number which uniquely identify our telephone device so calls can be directed

    to us via the network.
Just like a telephone town, region or country code redirects telephone calls to the correct locations the internet uses to help humans determine where or what type of domain they are visiting. So, www.example.com is a familiar domain format for many of us and simply means it is a commercial site for the

“example” second level domain(SLD). It is rather vague as the site could actually be anywhere in the world!
However, www.example.co.uk has a top level domain of co.uk and means it is a site for a company in the United Kingdom. Or at least, it should mean that but sometimes the actual site may not be anywhere near its intended

geographical location as these human domain names can be associated with any internet protocol address (IP Address). The IP address is the actual way the devices or machines on the internet connect together behind the

scenes and directs traffic to the correct location. The alphabetic domain names are purely for human useage.
For most of us an Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides our unique IP address on the internet when we subscribe to their online service.

You will notice a domain name actually hasthree elements, the site type, the second level domain (SLD) name and the Top Level Domain identifier. So, in our example www.example.com the first element “www’ informs the network

to search and connect to the world wide web second level domain called “example” which is a commercial site somewhere in the world. Behind the scenes using Domain Name Services(DNS) this name is translated into a

numeric value or IP address to pinpoint the site and display it in your browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer. ICANN is the official governing body in charge of reconciling all domain names with IP Addresses across the globe.

There are other types of sites you can connect to such as FTP for instance, which allow you to upload or download files to and from your web site.

    Domain Names FAQ

First things first. What Is The Purpose Of my web Site
It is a simple enough question but often skipped past in the rush to create something online. I know personally this was the case with one of my early sites where I did not clearly answer this basic question.
